Thanks everyone for suggestions. Unfortunately I am limited in protocol options I can work with. My borders are strictly defined in this project and I can work within RDP only. The customer moved its infrastructure to the Cloud IaaS. My portion of work was moving over their AD and creating RDS infrastructure for remote access from anywhere.
Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately I am not controlling the networking aspect of this project. The customer would like to keep this functionality within the boundaries. Redirected drives or sharing would be my last resort because it opens up a can of worms. I'd like to be in control of what users can transfer from their "untrusted" computers onto the server.
Thanks everyone for input but the goal I am trying to achieve is publishing an app I wish I could find one on RDWeb that the user would launch and get a window saying "pick your local file for upload". Not even an option to choose destinations. Just the file for the upload. I need to keep the management of user-side issues at zero. No software installed on their PC's. Access only from RD Portal. Sign in, launch uploader, upload file, launch the special software, find the uploaded file on the server, import, generate report, save the report locally.
Any RD Web app wouldn't give you access to their local drive without using the redirection. RD Web apps open on the terminal server and that is all they allow access to. I was thinking about this too. For now, I am going to use redirection and publish a File Explorer, but I need to harden the access Through group policy, you could setup software restrictions to only allow certain extensions I think.
